Exhibit: A Jubilee Anniversary for a Jubilee Bell
Everyone knows about the Liberty Bell. Or do they? This exhibit, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Liberty Bell Shrine Museum in Allentown, answers the question, why was the bell cast in the first place? Long before it became known as the Liberty Bell, it was cast to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Charter of Privileges of William Penn. The Charter is one of the documents that formed the basis for our nation’s Bill of Rights. By special arrangement with the American Philosophical Society, an exact replica of the original document will be on display at the museum.
Visitors will learn about the purpose of bells in colonial life, why the bell was cast for the State House building, as well as the evolution of what was simply a town bell into what became a symbol of freedom recognized around the world. The exhibit also answers the question, why is there a museum dedicated to the Liberty Bell in Allentown? It tells the story of the vision of the founders of the “Shrine” and more.
The museum is free to the public, donations are welcomed.
The Liberty Bell Museum is located in historic Zion’s church at 622 W. Hamilton Street, Allentown. Parking for this event is available behind and next to the church building, as well as on street. More information is available at www.LibertyBellMuseum.org.
